Description

The NOVA Basic Crisis Response Team Training is a 24-hour training pre-approved by the National Advocate Credentialing Program (NACP)® & D-SAACP.  The course is designed to provide individuals with a comprehensive overview of NOVA’s Crisis Intervention Model. This CRT Basic training will consist of three days of in-person instruction. To earn a certificate of completion, students must attend ALL live class days and complete the end of class survey.

With funding through SAMHSA’s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act Grant, OhioMHAS is planning a series of regional NOVA Crisis Response Team Trainings for 2025. The free trainings will take place between February and August 2025, in several counties around the state. These trainings are geared toward mental health professionals, victim advocates, law enforcement personnel, and others who confront human crisis in their work.

BASIC    8:00 AM -5:00 PM each day
February 4-6, 2025  =  Mason, Ohio
February 11-13, 2025  =  Dayton, Ohio
April 15-17, 2025  =  Portsmouth, Ohio
April 29-May 1, 2025  =  Tiffin, Ohio

Participants who complete the three-day training will receive a NOVA Certificate and will be offered the opportunity to sign up for the Ohio Crisis Response Team (OCRT), a highly qualified, all-volunteer mobilization group that may be deployed to respond to traumatic events in Ohio and other states.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: A full refund minus $65 processing fee is available if cancellation is made at least 24 hours prior to the first day of the session.   After this date no refunds will be available.

Objectives

BASIC Crisis Response Team (CRT) Training Objectives

Introduction: Orientation on Crisis Response Teams
               • To initiate training and group cohesion
               • To create expectations for training including group projects

Chapter 1: Overview of Crisis Response
               • To define trauma
               • To describe how crisis response and intervention can contribute to coping with trauma

Chapter 2: The Trauma Response: Internal Factors
               • To recognize the 3 stages of the physical and emotional crisis reaction
               • To distinguish between normal brain function & traumatic brain function
               • To apprehend how trauma affects brain function

Chapter 3: The Trauma Response: External Factors
               • To sample a variety of dimensions surrounding a traumatic event
               • To use these factors for considerations of diagramming a disaster

Chapter 4: Crisis Intervention - The NOVA Model (SSVVPP)
               • To identify Safety & Security, Ventilation & Validation and Prediction & Preparation
               • To explain Safety & Security, Ventilation & Validation and Prediction & Preparation
               • To practice Safety & Security, Ventilation & Validation and Prediction & Preparation

Chapter 5: Group Crisis Intervention
               • To identify the NOVA Model (SSVVPP) as applied to a group
               • To explain the NOVA Model (SSVVPP) as applied to a group

Chapter 6: Death, Loss and Grief
               • To engage participants on the concept of death and loss
               • To prepare participants to consider their own ‘stuff’ before becoming a responder
               • To understand key concrete steps to conveying uniquely bad news like a death notification

Chapter 7: Long-Term Stress Reactions
               • To understand long term stress reactions
               • To understand trigger events

Chapter 9: Spiritual Dimensions
               • To explore how trauma impacts various belief systems

Chapter 14 &15: Continuum of Age 
               • To explore the unique reactions of children to trauma
               • To examine how elders respond to trauma
               • To examine how physical and emotional disabilities can impact trauma survivors

Chapter 16: Stress of Caregivers
               • To examine what is stressful about responding to trauma
               • To learn positive coping strategies for responding to trauma
